There are different types of Domain Names, which are often associated to the type of website you want to run. There are also requirements and restriction on who can own certain sites. For example, .COM and .COM.AU names are generally for commercial business. Australian Domains including Domains that end in .AU are regulated by auDA - visit their website for requirements you may need to meet before you can apply for a Domain Name. .COM Domain names are 'generally' less regulated and are often associated with global busineses or United States based businesses. It is also harder to find addresses that are available for a .COM - often people buys these simply to be resold.

2. Place to store your website online, or Web Host

Much the same way as you still local files such as word documents, movies, or MP3s on your computer, you must have a location or server to store your website files so it can be access from anybody on the internet, often referred to as a Web Host.

Different Web Hosts offer different features that can limit speed (how quickly your website can be view), limit traffic or bandwidth (ie. limit downloads or number of visitors to your site), limit space (how much content you can store), or what can actually be displayed.

3. Website contents - what you actually want displayed

Once you have an address for people to find you, and a place to store your website, you need actual contents or webpages to be displayed. Whether you plan on running a personal blog, or online business your webpages needs to be designed and uploaded to your Web Host. Often a Web Host can restrict what you can upload and the types of files that can be displayed.

You can design the webpages yourself or have them professional made to your requirements. There is a substaintial amount of content that you can download and change yourself, as well as plenty of online tutorials that will help you design your own content. Basic websites can sometimes be made quite quickly or easier through an array of different software programs. However, some software can be a substaintial investment and advanced techiques or optimisations can take years to learn. 4. (Optional) Secure Connection or SSL Certificate for an online store

One very important additional feature to include with your website especially if you are running on online store is a SSL Certificate. A good SSL Certificate will allow customers to shop more securely with your website, and dramatically reduce the likelyhood of their personal information being intercepted.

Having a secure connection when using an online store is considered as a standard today. Not having one may turn customers away and loss potential sales.
